Commentary: San Antonio has work to do in supporting people with disabilities
Texas is home to more than 3.5 million individuals with disabilities, 12.1 % of our population. In terms easier to imagine, the number of Texans with disabilities outnumbers the population of San Antonio— the nation’s seventh-largest city —twice over.
These statistics, provided by the Office of the Texas Governor, will surprise many. More than 1 in 10 whom we meet have one or more types of disability: mobility, communication, intellectual, sensory or challenges with living independently or providing self-care.
At TEAMability, a nonprofit I founded in San Antonio 21 years ago, we provide services and therapy to those with complex disabilities. Yet, we strive every day to see both children and adults with disabilities for what they can do rather than what they cannot.

The nonprofit TEAMability celebrated its 20th year of providing inclusive services to those with complex disabilities at its annual fundraiser, the Two-Step Gala, on Friday, April 12.
“This event is our annual celebration of human potential and those who believe in it,” said Barbara Goldman, CEO of TEAMability.

San Antonio outpatient clinic offers solutions for children with disabilities
For almost 20 years, the outpatient clinic, Teamability, has been helping children with very complex disabilities achieve their potential.
Teamability’s founder and CEO, Barbara Goldman, says both therapists and educators work hand in hand to create care plans for children that are meaningful and fun but, more importantly, things they can be successful in achieving.
“We combine the expertise of special educators with that of highly qualified therapists,” said Goldman.
The facility uses state-of-the-art equipment that helps clients achieve maximum results while in therapy.

TEAMability is making great strides, challenging expectations by seeing ability first
For children and adults living with multiple and severe disabilities, receiving the assistance that is necessary to actively participate in life can sometimes fall short.
Where general assumption is made based on the outward view of the person, TEAMability looks beyond, challenging the assumptions and identifying an individuals’ abilities that are already there.
TEAMability is a nonprofit organization with a mission to address the complex challenges of individuals of all ages with multiple disabilities and their families..
